WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Penguins organization sent six players to the 2023 IIHF World Championship, and now one is coming back with something for their trophy room. Defenseman Pierre-Olivier Joseph won the gold medal with Team Canada on Sunday, defeating Germany, 5-2, in the tournament final.

Joseph logged over 22 minutes of ice time in Canada’s clinching game, and averaged 19:47 minutes per game in 10 contests. The 23-year-old blueliner earned one goal and a +6 rating throughout the tournament, as well.

Penguins Nick Bonino, Drew O’Connor and Casey DeSmith had a chance to medal on Sunday as well, but fell short against Latvia in the bronze medal game. The 4-3, overtime triumph for Latvia earned it its first-ever medal at an IIHF World Championship. The U.S. ended up in the bronze medal game after it dropped a previous overtime decision to Germany in Saturday’s semifinal. Team USA went 8-0-2 in 10 games, but will go home empty-handed despite never being bested in regulation.
