MOOSE CONVERT EXTRA POINT, EARN SPLIT WITH PENGUINS

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – Sergei Shirokov, freshly re-assigned by the parent Vancouver Canucks earlier in the day, made his presence known by tallying a first period power-play goal and the lone shootout goal, as the Manitoba Moose defeated the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 2-1 on Friday night at MTS Centre.

The Penguins picked up three of a possible four points on their-two day stay in Winnipeg, thanks to superb penalty killing by center Dustin Jeffrey in the second period. On the Penguins’ third consecutive penalty kill of the period, Jeffrey had a second breakaway on which he was interfered. Referee David Banfield issued Jeffrey a penalty shot and he converted, slipping the puck through the five-hole of Moose goaltender Daren Machesney to knot the score at one.

For the second consecutive night, the two teams would play a defensive battle through regulation.

A high-sticking penalty to Moose defenseman Nolan Baumgartner would give the visitors a 4-on-3 power play for a good bit of the overtime, but Machesney and the Moose defense buckled down and kept the Penguins off the scoresheet.

Moose head coach Scott Arniel chose to have the Penguins take the first chance in the shootout. Center Wyatt Smith would be denied by Machesney, and Shirokov went on to find paydirt behind Curry. Machesney would then stop Ryan Bayda, Konstantin Pushkarev, Luca Caputi, and Jeffrey and help his team preserve the 2-1 victory.

The Penguins will depart for Ontario tomorrow and will finish their Canada trip with a 4:00 pm tilt on Sunday, November 1st against the Toronto Marlies. The team will return home on Friday, November 6th to face the Norfolk Admirals at 7:05 PM, and the first 5,000 fans through the gates will receive a team photo courtesy of Unigraphic Color Corporation.

NOTES: C Dustin Jeffrey’s penalty shot conversion was only the second in Penguins history… The only penalty shot goal prior to Friday was Rico Fata’s tally against Binghamton’s Billy Thompson, on January 20, 2006 at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena…The Penguins finished 0-for-6 on the power play, but a strong 6-for-7 on the penalty kill… The Moose have played four consecutive games which went at least to overtime, while the Penguins have gone three straight games with an extra session.
